The number of people who want to become personal trainers keeps growing with time. As per the prediction of industry specialists the employment of fitness professionals will rise 8% from 2014 to 2024. The study of physical activity, exercise, etc. grew by more than 50% from 2003 to 2008. Efforts are being made to establish the standards for fitness and health facility practices. There is also a recent development of opportunities in working with people with disabilities. Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer (CIFT) is the most widely recognized certification for working with people with disabilities. CIFT not only focuses on the physiological and biomechanical aspects of physical activity programming for people but also on disability awareness, inclusive programming, and considerations in behavior modification for people.
Every year the American College of Sports Medicine publishes a list of top trends in the fitness industry. However, these trends are not identified by an actual consumer, but by the fitness professionals. There were 42 possible trends in the 2017 survey. Here is the list of top 10 fitness trends for 2017.
- Wearable technology: Wearable technology includes activity trackers, heart rate monitors, smartwatches, GPS tracking devices, and smart eyeglasses. As per the predictions of business analysts the apple iWatch sales will exceed 485 million by the year 2018.
- Bodyweight training: Bodyweight training has become popular in gyms during the last few years. Bodyweight training uses minimal equipment making it more affordable and is not only limited to just push-ups and pull-ups but is much more than that.
- High-intensity interval training (HIIT): HIIT involves short bursts of high-intensity exercises followed by a short period of rest or recovery. These exercises take less than 30 minutes to perform. Many survey takers claimed that their clients liked this program for a short period of time and soon started looking for a different type of workout. Despite the risk of high injury rates, these exercises have become popular in gyms.
- Educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals: The number of the organization offering health and fitness certifications is continuously increasing, but the consumer should choose professionals certified through the programs that are accredited by the national commission for certifying agencies (NCCA). ACSM is one of the largest and most famous fitness-certification organizations in the world. As per the predictions of the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of fitness trainers and instructors will grow 8% from 2014 to 2014. Recently, the non-profit Coalition for the Registration of Exercise Professionals (CREP) was created by an organization that offers NCCA-accredited exercise certifications, which maintains the United States registry of Exercise Professionals.
- Strength training: Strength training remains popular in many health and fitness industry. There are many others who focus on using weight training to improve or maintain strength. Strength training is an important part of a complete exercise program for all physical activity levels.
- Group training: Group training programs have been around for a long time and have appeared as a potential worldwide trend. Group exercise instructors teach and motivate individuals through intentionally designed group exercise classes. Group programs are designed to be motivational and effective for people with different fitness goals.
- Exercise is medicine: Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) that is focused on encouraging primary care physicians and other health care providers to include physical activity when designing treatment plans for patients and referring their patients to exercise professionals. This program believes that physical activity is integral in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
- Yoga: Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines that originated in ancient India. Yoga utilizes a series of specific bodily postures practiced for health and relaxation which includes power yoga, ashtanga, yogalates, Bikram, Kripalu, Anusara, vinyasa, kundalini, Sivananda, and others.
- Personal training: Many students are preparing themselves for careers in allied health fields such as personal training. Education and training for personal trainers have become increasingly important to the health and fitness facilities that employ them.
- Exercise and weight loss: The combination of exercise and diet are essential for weight loss maintenance and can improve compliance to caloric restriction diets. Health and fitness professionals providing weight loss programs are increasingly incorporating regular exercises and caloric restrictions for better weight control in their clients.
